One Plant bars

One Plant bars review – vegan, GF & keto snack bars

Guys, I’m ridiculously excited about the new One Plant bars that just launched. I have a confession to make — sometimes, I cheat on my diet. Especially when I’m on vacation and don’t have easy access to low carb foods that are free of both gluten and dairy. I always end up regretting it later, but sometimes you just need to cut loose and eat what you’re craving. One time, I ended up dry heaving in my Boston hotel room at 2am after gorging myself on clam chowder, and all the convenience stores that sold anti-nausea meds were closed. I’m still not sure that it was worth it, but when in Boston, you eat clam chowder.

I’ve been seeing One protein bars in stores for a few years now. The colorful packaging is inviting, and the pictures of desserts on the front look so tasty. That’s why I’m always bummed when I read the ingredients for the fifth time. Nope, still contains milk. I’ve even broken a few times and eaten them, which is how I know they are much tastier than most of the other protein bars on the market. That’s why I’m so excited that they finally have a plant-based version: the One Plant bars.

There are 4 flavors: Banana Nut Bread, Carrot Cake, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Churro. I wasn’t able to find the Carrot Cake flavor in stores, but I purchased the other 3 to test out and see if they can hold their own against the regular One bars, or other protein bars I’ve tried. I didn’t feel that I was missing out on much, as Carrot Cake is the worst reviewed flavor on the product website.

Tasting the Bars

When I first unwrapped the One Plant bars, I was surprised by the chocolate coating. Many low-carb plant-based bars are dry and chalky, and crumble when you bite into them. This bar looked smooth and creamy. When I took the first bite, I was not disappointed. The bar was soft and immediately started melting in my mouth. It had a delicious, sweet flavor, and the sugar alcohols didn’t leave a bitter aftertaste.

One Plant Chocolate Peanut Butter

Reese’s cups. Buckeyes. Peanut butter pie. What do all of these have in common? Chocolate + peanut butter. I think many people will agree with me that this is one of the most addictive flavor combinations out there. That’s why I opted to try this flavor first. The chocolate coating was very creamy and decadent, and it had the perfect blend of chocolate and peanut butter. Each bite was pure pleasure. Protein bars have no business tasting this good.

One Plant Banana Nut Bread

Maybe the Chocolate Peanut Butter bar raised my expectations too high, because I was slightly disappointed when I bit into this bar. It tasted very strongly of artificial banana flavor. It reminded me of those banana flavored candies that came out of candy machines when I was a kid. I think it’s one of those flavors that you either love or you hate, there is no in-between. I’m one of those people who hates that flavor, so I didn’t particularly enjoy this bar. I don’t think it was bad, but it wasn’t my taste. The texture was still heavenly, though, so I didn’t have much trouble finishing the bar.

One Plant Churro

This is the flavor I was most excited about. Has anyone ever had a bad churro? Not possible. As soon as I bit into it, I tasted cinnamon. In fact, it tasted just like a cinnamon roll. I can definitely taste the churro, too, but I think they could have named this one cinnamon roll and it would have made just as much sense. Maybe that’s why I love both churros and cinnamon rolls so much — they’re both basically just bread with cinnamon and sugar. Either way, I could not stop eating this one. When I was finished, I nearly devoured a second bar, it was that good.

Nutrition

The bars are a bit small, ranging from 160 to 180 calories, which puts them slightly below the average calorie content for a snack bar (usually around 200). They all boast 12 grams of protein per bar. Each bar has 21 carbs, 8-9 grams of fiber, and 6g sugar alcohols. This puts the net carbs at 6-7g. As someone who has searched far and wide for a good keto bar, this is one of the better macronutrient breakdowns I’ve seen.

They’re made with a blend of plant proteins — pea protein, rice, protein, and almond protein. They are sweetened with vegetable glycerin, maltitol, and monk fruit extract. There is nothing particularly healthy about the ingredients (it’s definitely not Paleo or Whole 30), but they won’t spike your blood sugar (only 1g of sugar!), and they provide protein to fuel your workouts. I also didn’t find that these bars gave me heartburn or sat heavy in my stomach the way that some keto snacks do. I felt good and energetic after eating them.

Where can I get them?

I’ve seen the bars in 3 stores — Whole Foods, Publix, and Kroger. Both Kroger and Publix only had 2 flavors, while Whole Foods had 3. I was able to find all 4 flavors available on Amazon, at a cheaper price than I paid in store. A 12-pack on Amazon is $27.99, or about $2.33 per bar, compared to the $2.69 I paid at Whole Foods. Right now, the Banana Nut Bread flavor is on sale for $23.97, or $1.99 per bar. While pricey compared to a basic granola bar, this is a similar price point to other specialty bars, let alone one that is keto, gluten-free, and vegan.

My favorite flavors

Verdict

Chocolate Peanut Butter: 9/10

Banana Nut Bread: 8.5/10

Churro: 9.5/10

I’m not joking when I say that these are some of the best snack bars I’ve ever tried. Plus, they work with many different food plans. Whether you’re keto, vegan, gluten-free, or all of the above, the One Plant bars can fit into your diet. They’re certainly one of my new favorites, and I will continue to buy the Chocolate Peanut Butter and Churro flavors. They make a great afternoon snack to tide yourself over until dinner. Please let me know if you try them!
